Don’t worry… Be Happy!

Just a short post today to say… Life is Good. Sometimes we worry too much about things that are out of our control, and then the entire situation turns out better than expected. You can’t get that time back, you know… that worry time. A friend recently posted a quote on facebook that says it all: You can’t change the past, but you can ruin the present by worrying about the future! amen to that! So I hope you live in the moment and enjoy every minute of this holiday weekend. For my friends who are in other countries and

Life is Change!

I’ve been sharing some of the stories about my childhood lately, and the message I’m trying to convey is that we can all find the strength we need when we need it. I grew up in the family that put the ‘dis’ in disfunctional… but have you ever met a truly ‘functional’ family?? A comedian that I use to represent, back in my talent agent days, had the best line… ‘We just met, but I know we have a lot in common… we all grew up in a 2 story house… the story you told the neighbors and the truth!’

Parents that are Grand…

I used to get this question a lot… ‘How did you turn out so normal considering your crazy childhood?’  I have to admit, I never knew how to answer.  I think ‘normal’ is a relative term, and I used to be stumped by the question.  It took me years to finally figure out what kept me sane through the craziness… my Grandparents! Vera Jane and Forrest Grady Tate (circa 1965)   A little back story… My grandfather was a Southern Baptist minister, who was very physically abusive to his 4 kids. They were very strict with their kids.   Their

Changes and Challenges

Today I want to write about change, challenges and how we handle it. I’m going through some personal challenges at the moment that are definitely going to create change.  But, I believe the change has been long overdue.  Besides, I rarely back away from a challenge in life. When I was 12 years old I ran away from home with my 2 yr. old brother.  Some people are shocked when they hear that, and some people think I must have been such a brave and strong young girl.  Strong, yes… brave?  I had adults that helped me before, during and

THE Wedding of 2009!

I hope wherever you were this Father’s Day weekend it was as beautiful as it was here. But today’s post is about last year’s Father’s Day weekend, and the most beautiful wedding you can imagine. I’m a city girl. I know nothing about farms and barns. Or I should say, I knew nothing until last year. As a floral designer I’ve adapted to many a venue and always been pleased with the result, but creating a wedding reception in a barn, on a farm in VA, was a first for me! There wasn’t any pressure though… it was just my

The Porch

Years ago I wrote some poetry. Most of it was personal and a sort of catharsis, but a few poems became favorites of mine and other’s enjoyed them too. So I thought I’d post the one I have framed at the beach house, to celebrate this gorgeous weather we’re expecting over the weekend. ‘The Porch’ The sun rises, the porch awaits.Strains of Mozart, hot coffee and the morning paper…The perfect day begins!Gentle breezes wafting, greeting us from the beach…Cocktails and conversation, family and friends,On the Porch. Night settles in, the porch is calm.Candlelight and stars, jazz softly playing…As we resist

What gives you Bliss?

I’ve had a few days without internet I could depend on, (had to try and grab an open wifi when possible), and on top of that… no TV! That, my friends is my idea of roughing it! I also have to mention that I was at our beach house. The beach house is, aside from my kids, one of the greatest gifts God has ever given me! Not that I didn’t work like a dog to get it… believe me I waited 30+ yrs. and it was worth everything. That said… we haven’t had cable or internet hooked up yet,

Little Victories!

Since I started this blog in late Feb., I’ve been thinking a lot about life, in general and mine specifically. Not obsessing, mind you… I don’t obsess. However, I believe that if you don’t have a purpose, maybe you should ask yourself why you are here. Sometimes, I believe, we are here for someone other than ourselves. That’s ok. But, while you’re helping someone else, try to keep yourself active. Learn new things, be adventurous, above all… GROW! Which brings me to my little victory… if you look at the side bar on this blog you will now see a

Leaving the U.N. for Long Island

After our year in NJ at the ’U.N.’ Garden Apt. we were transferred to Long Island. Again, stuck in the metropolitan NYC area with no real disposable income. But, with 2 small kids, it was just as well. We did manage to find a large duplex to rent, so we had more room, anyway. We settled in Port Washington, on the North Shore of L.I. because we had friends in that area. It turned out the duplex was only a block away from them, so that influenced our decision. The landlords lived downstairs from us and I have to say
